The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP-EIB) is a European Investment Bank (EIB)-assisted initiative aimed at reducing the vulnerability of Nigeria’s population to soil erosion and associated land degradation. The project is a critical intervention designed to address environmental degradation and foster sustainable development through innovative climate adaptation strategies.

NEWMAP-EIB in Abia State

Abia State NEWMAP-EIB is at the forefront of combating the environmental challenges posed by erosion and climate change. Funded by the European Investment Bank, the project is committed to building resilience, advancing sustainable land management, and supporting communities impacted by erosion. The Abia State Project Management Unit (PMU) is located at:

NEWMAP-EIB House, beside State Commissioner’s Quarters, New Government Station Layout, Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria.

The project is led by Mr. Ikechukwu Ukaegbu, an innovative and proactive Coordinator dedicated to driving transformative environmental solutions in the State.

Vision

To tackle Abia State’s environmental challenges through flood and erosion remediation, slope stabilization, climate adaptation, watershed management, capacity building, and livelihood support.

Mission

To contribute to Nigeria’s climate change adaptation and mitigation through a watershed management approach that promotes sustainable development and environmental resilience.

Key Project Components

1. Flood and Erosion Remediation: Implementation of engineering solutions to stabilize erosion-prone areas and mitigate flooding.
2. Watershed and Landscape Management: Rehabilitating degraded lands and promoting sustainable land use practices.
3. Climate Change Adaptation: Enhancing resilience to climate change through community-focused interventions.
4. Livelihood Support: Providing alternative means of income for affected communities to reduce dependency on environmentally harmful practices.
5. Capacity Building: Strengthening institutional frameworks and community capacity for effective environmental management.
